Alejandra Rivera Rangel, Mexico

As a student I am happy because I have an excellent teacher, flutist Clara Nováková, whom I met in Mexico a few years ago. I enjoy being here playing music and meeting local and overseas students, sharing the universal language—music. I am proud of SUSM because of its great teachers, and I can see a successful future of SUSM. I am so grateful to have the opportunity of being one of the first overseas students in SUSM and being able to represent Mexico in this country.

Soochow University School of Music is first and foremost a great opportunity for me to study under Dr. Angela Cholakyan. This is a very exciting period of my life in which I can further my studies in music. The experience of living in China is quite different from North America. However, the university is very helpful in easing the transition, and I am quickly adjusting to life in Suzhou. The other international students are a very welcome presence and provide a pleasant environment to live in. It is also really great that the Chinese students are very friendly and so eager to help me with whatever I need.

I think the reason for me to choose Soochow University is that it has remarkable and excellent faculty. It is great that I have the opportunity to learn from professors from all around the world. The collaboration program with Bard College is another reason why I chose Soochow University. Not only can I still study music performance but I can also have the chance to earn another major like economics or history, supporting my music life and enriching my accomplishments. I think it will greatly enhance my life.

The new Music School of Soochow University seeks to provide the best level of study with first-class facilities located in Suzhou, which is only a 25-minute train ride away from Shanghai. Both Suzhou and Shanghai are two of the best cities in China for their remarkable development in various fields. Studying here, at a Chinese College with an international environment, is an excellent opportunity for me to prepare myself for the future.

I heard about Soochow University School of Music from Professor Alexander Suleiman, whom I have worked with for many years at festivals in Europe and the Middle East. I earned my Master’s degree in cello performance at Kingston University, London. I am currently one of the music department's faculty of Yarmouk University in Jordan. The opportunity to study with professor Suleiman, who is a well-known cellist worldwide, and a fantastic teacher, and a master of the instrument, is too good to be missed.

I am very lucky and glad to study at SUSM. It is a wonderful opportunity for me to work with great professors from all over the world and to meet overseas students. I can also discover and learn a lot about Chinese culture and its people. Suzhou is a beautiful city, and it is great to be so close to Shanghai, one of the most dynamic cities in the world. Being in China this year is going to be very significant for me, in terms of both personal and professional development.

Matthieu James Henri Dupont, France

Before I came here to Suzhou, I wanted to go to a different country without having any idea. I wanted to improve my musical abilities somewhere outside of France. Then I met Professor Nicolas Tulliez, who told me that he would be moving to China for teaching. I saw an opportunity to get a fresh take on learning harp and discover another culture. Both of my desires can be satisfied there. Finally I chose to follow him to China. At the School of Music I am improving my technique. Here I can try to approach music in different ways. In Soochow University School of Music we trust!

Mohamed Hassan Aly Abd Elrahman, Egypt

I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Cello Performance from Cairo Conservatory. I have worked with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and have performed both Western music and Arabic music in many concerts. I met Professor Alexander Suleiman, studied with him in masterclasses and workshops in Europe, and learned about the Soochow University School of Music. Knowing that Professor Suleiman is a member of the faculty at the School of Music I decided to follow him to pursue my studies with him. I also received a generous grant from the school to cover tuition and accommodation.

Rodrigo Nieves Avendaño, Mexico

I knew about the university from Professor Clara, who is a renowned musician. I think it would be a good experience to learn music from a different perspective. In the West we normally do not hear about the development of classical music in China; I think it is interesting to learn about it. The university is located in a beautiful city. Although I thought in the beginning that the language barrier would be a problem, I often meet people who are always willing to help. The School of Music has musicians with diverse backgrounds. This is why I think it will be an enriching experience to learn from them!

Sharon Hui-Shan How, Singapore

What continuously astonishes me from the moment I entered the school is the friendly environment that exists on our campus, from the warmness of my social environment to the kindness of my professors. The ideal location of the campus, coupled with the vast amount of parks and greeneries within it, makes it a very peaceful place for thinking and learning. Being among the first group of international students is really exciting for me, as I see myself as a pioneer who will contribute to SUSM’s history, because it makes me feel part of something so much bigger than myself.

I am attracted by the opportunity to be enrolled in the double-degree program, which was established by Bard Conservatory of Music and Soochow University School of Music. Surely, this will help me to instill interdisciplinary learning and be a musical inspiration. On the other hand, I believe that the subjects beside music will help me create more opportunities and provide me with richer resources in my future. I am also very fortunate to have the chance to be mentored by these outstanding musicians. I also benefit a lot from the learning environment and atmosphere. Suzhou, known as the "Venice of the East", is proud of its rich cultural legacy in the arts. Studying Western art music in such an environment will certainly be an enriching experience.
