Music Library

Suzhou University School of Music Library is a newly established professional library, housing music scores, sound recordings, music ralated books, journals/magazines, online music and electronic research databases. Its collections and services provide the best possible informational, educational, cultural and recreational services in a warm and inviting environment to School of Music and the entire University faculty members and students for their teaching, study, research, artistic development and enjoyment.


The Library holdings include chamber music, orchestra music, instrumental solo and ensemble scores, complete works of nationally and internationally well known composers, world standard music reference material, audio/video recordings, and music indexes/databases. The Library facilities include computer search stations with network connection and wireless capabilities for laptops, study carrels, reading tables, audio/video stations.

 


Zhen-Mei Wang, Music Library Director


Ms. Zhen-Mei Wang, originally from Suzhou, was born into a musical family.  She began her musical training with her mother Ma Siju, the sister of famous Chinese composer Ma Sicong.  She enrolled in the Central Conservatory of Music Preparatory School in 1962. After the Cultural Revolution she was the pianist at the Tianjing Dance and Opera Theater.  Before going to the United States, she taught piano at the Central Conservatory of Music. 


Immigrating to the US in 1980s, Ms. Wang earned her Master of Music degree (MM) in Piano Performance at American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Master of Art (MA) in Music History at Kent State University and finally, a Master of Science (MS) in Library Science and Information Studies at Florida State University.  After graduating from Florida State, Ms. Wang was employed at the Free Library of Philadelphia for 20 years where she was the reference librarian in various departments such as Education, Philosophy and Religion; Social Science and History; and Music. Throughout her life, Ms. Wang stayed active in music, performing chamber music, piano accompaniment, as well as teaching in the Philadelphia area.


Ms. Wang is also known for her translation of popular English language books about piano and piano performance.  Her most well known is titled《Schnabel’s Interpretation of Piano Music》by . Arthur Schnabel Additionally,  she has published numerous articles introducing the famous German/American pianist Mr. Arthur Schnabel to the Chinese audience in Piano Artistry magazine. Zhen-Mei Wang has actively participated in many musical activities for the Chinese community in Philadelphia area, including arranging for the return of Ma Sicong's ashes to China. She organized and participated in the Centennial Memorial Concert for Mr. Ma Sicong to great acclaim In 2012.  Ms. Wang accepted Dean Wu Hekun’s invitation to take the post of Director for School of Music Library at Suzho University.
